Let’s unpack this because there’s a lot going on here, lot of ignorance and ableism and hypocrisy, and bait or nah, I’d rather educate ignorance. Also there’s nothing on the TV and I don’t have on hand links to posts by @the-real-seebs that would explain a lot of the issues with your statement better than I could. Anyway!
If one had sexual fantasies and attractions about raping real life children, I would completely agree for both parties’ safety that they avoid children and that the adult with such fantasies seek help. As their desires would be, you know, high grounds for a diagnosis of paedophilic disorder (the sexual desire for kids) and obviously the mentally ill need help in controlling their thoughts and behaviors.
If one had intrusive thoughts about raping kids or intrusive obsessive fears about being a paedophile but no attractions to kids, I’d also be in favor of that person avoiding kids and seeking help as that sounds like pure obsession type obsessive compulsive disorder and again obviously the mentally ill need help.
If either of the above groups acted on their thoughts, they would be disgusting and deserve to be prosecuted within the fullest extent of the law, as well as given treatment for their illnesses so that it does not happen again. This is how we treat all people, mentally ill or not, who do bad actions. Thoughts, disgusting as you or I find them, do not determine a person’s character. After all, every one of us, even the most mentally healthy, have inappropriate/bad/wrong thoughts (talk to anyone who has ever been stuck in traffic.)
But. If someone happens to enjoy fiction – fan or original – about icky topics such as rape/non-con, teens and adults/underage, serial killers in love, gorey hyperviolent revenge, etc., that’s normal as fuck and far from grounds to make any psychiatric diagnosis. All I have ever talked about with regard to my interests is my enjoyment of fiction about certain relationships. You don’t have to LIKE every bit of art or writing out there but one’s art or writing they make or consume does not denote their mental health or moral fibre, and to treat people like it does is, frankly, disgusting.
Calling the mentally ill disgusting solely by virtue of their mental illness does nothing but hurt those who are ill and endanger others around the ill person by making it harder for the ill person to receive help due to the stigma that their illness makes them disgusting or somehow subhuman.
So unless you are ready to call those with intrusive violent thoughts disgusting or, with regards to fiction, are ready to rail against fans of Quentin Tarantino films or people who love gore art, please take your hypocritical thought policing elsewhere.
Hating pedophiles for being attracted to children isn’t ableist, because pedophilia isn’t a mental illness.
From the DSM-5:
“Most people with atypical sexual interests do not have a mental disorder. To be diagnosed with a paraphilic disorder, DSM-5 requires that people with these interests:
- Feel personal distress about their interest, not merely distress resulting from society’s disapproval.
- Have a sexual desire or behavior that involves another person’s psychological distress, injury, or death, or a desire for sexual behaviors involving unwilling persons or persons unable to give legal consent.”
Since most pedophiles don’t feel bad about being attracted to kids, they can’t be classified as mentally ill because of it.
